I have been sober for nearly ten years thanks to the fellowship of A.A., sponsor, 12-steps, and a God of my understanding. I was a "high functioning alcoholic" who was starting to lose my grip on the functional aspect. Yet, it was very difficult for me to acknowledge I was alcoholic because I had kept the same business for over 5 years, was wed, had a home, had fine clothes, etc. Once I set out to attend A.A. meetings, I encountered others who drank exactly like me, felt like me, and lived like me. That power to interrelate and identify is what began me on the road to a day-by-day recovery. I never thought I could experience my life without alcohol. Now I am so thankful to wake up and know what came about the night before, not be filled with self-reproach or sorrow, and feel physically good.
